Once the two families agree on the marriage, the groom’s family prepares betrothal gifts to bring to the bride’s family during the betrothal ceremony. The gifts typically include tea cakes, pork, wine, betel and areca nut, and money, following local custom.

This ritual officially recognizes the in-law relationship between the two families, while also expressing the groom’s family’s respect for the bride’s family and their promise of a lasting marriage. Quan Lang song to request the bride: The groom’s family sends a representative Quan Lang group to the bride’s family, skillfully singing call-and-response verses in the Tay language to ask permission to receive the bride.

Note: The Quan Lang singing ritual to request the bride is no longer maintained in all localities. Depending on the region and actual conditions, some Tay communities still fully preserve this ritual, while others have simplified it or replaced it with simpler ways of requesting the bride.
Bride-welcoming ritual: After the bride-requesting ritual is complete, the bride puts on her traditional costume, is presented with a conical hat, performs a ritual bow to give thanks to the ancestors and her birth parents, expressing gratitude for their care in raising her, before joining the procession to the groom’s family home.

2.4. The Return Visit Ceremony
A few days after the wedding, the young couple brings gifts to visit the bride’s birth parents (her maternal family).
This ritual expresses the gratitude of the bride and groom toward the bride’s parents and ancestors, while also affirming the close, lasting bond between the two families after becoming in-laws.
